The Montgo mountain and its surroundings was declared an officially protected nature reserve in 1987 because of its wealthy flora and fauna. The mountain has a height of 753 metres and is the habitat of more than 600 plant species. Amongst them are specially the Kermes oaks, lavender, marine fennel,Valencian rock violet, black juniper and fan palms.With regards to the fauna there is a diversity of bird species like the traditional seagull or the Audouin’s gull, ravens, several sepecies of birds of prey like hawks and eagles, several owls and peregrine falcons. Of course there are also reptiles, amphibians and mammels like dormice, rabbits, badgers, foxes, toads, snakes, country rats and weasels that can be observed in the area.
You can do a lot of hikes on the (PR V 152) or the “Route Verde”. All of these routes are marked and vary between low and medium difficulty.Discover the caves “Cova de l’Aigua” or “Cova del Camell”, or hike up to the summit of the Montgo, where you will be able to contemplate wonderful panoramic views of the surroundings, feel the nature with the sea in the background.
